JouleBug worked with Harker’s Upper School to support its mission of “lifelong learners, well-rounded global citizens and kind, respectful individuals” by inspiring school-wide participation in a sustainability initiative.

More than 300 students, parents, faculty and staff participated and enjoyed the competitive spirit of the Sustainability Challenge.

The Faculty Green Committee and student-led Green Team wanted to find a fun way to bring sustainable practice to the entire student body. They all thought an app would be a great way to get everyone involved and were excited to learn about JouleBug.

The Harker Upper School conducted a week-long sustainability Challenge using SJEnvironment, the JouleBug app localized for the City of San Jose, where Harker is located. Each of the four participating grades (nine through twelve), parents, and faculty and staff, competed as teams to see who could complete and log the most sustainable actions during the Challenge period. Several local sponsors were recruited to provide prizes to the winners.

With more than 300 people participating, everyone had a chance to challenge their peers to take action and show off their own sustainable spirit! The app was accessible and fun, but the social aspect really took the challenge to another level. Students were able to take their new knowledge of sustainable practice home and involve their parents in the competition, leading to a significant and lasting impact for all pariticpants. The Faculty Green Committee and Green Team are excited to work with JouleBug again!

As the year goes on, I’m going to be much more aware of sustainable actions.
